In a previous communication we have reported that an increased oxygen consumption can be observed accompanying the synthesis of urea by liver slices from ammonium bicarbonate. This observation is now confirmed, and the results of additional experiments are presented which elucidate to some extent some of the general features of the mechanism of the transfer of energy in this and probably other coupled reactions.
