We have observed the ^3P_1 → ^3P_0 ground state transition of C_I emission toward ζ Oph. We compare this observation with predictions made from Copernicus ultraviolet absorption measurements of the population of the ^3P_1 level and with millimeter wave observations of CO.

We are grateful to the crew and management of the NASA's KAO for the excellent flight without which it wouldn't have been possible to gather these data. We thank E. Brown and M. Wengler for their help in making these observations and K. de Boer, E. Shaya, and E. van Dishoeck for their useful comments. Airborne astronomy at Caltech is supported by NASA under grant NAG 2-1.|
