Why does MSE not have a founder?
Modern cosmology is said to have been founded by Copernicus, modern
physics by Galileo and Newton, chemistry by Lavoisier. Every branch of
modern science, even every sub-discipline has forged an image of a
founding hero, duly celebrated by the disciplinary community. Who is
the founder of materials science? To my knowledge, there is no
candidate for this prestigious position. This is not for want of
genius or for lack of heroism among material scientists. Could it be
an indication that MSE differs from other scientific disciplines?
