Apollo Guidance Computer LinksA great advantage of working on an Apollo-related project is that a great deal of historical writing and sources are already available on the web. Of course that can also be a curse, as a reader is quickly overwhelmed by the volume of the project. In general, we are trying to not repeat data or history that has already been posted, except where we can contribute new sources and interpretations. Most of the existing work, for example, deals with the AGC within the context of NASA and Apollo, but tends not to address its relationship to broader currents in the history of technology, computing, and industry. NASA history links on Apollo -- an incredible resource, with lots of official histories in full-text online. NASA titles relevant to the AGC include: Apollo Lunar Surface Journals -- this excellent and well-designed sites presents a detailed tour of the Apollo missions, organized around the detailed transcripts of Apollo communications. The transcripts are annotated with supporting material from the astronauts' debriefs and recent interviews. It's also got audio and video, images, and a great source of astronaut biographies. Apollo operations handbook -- technical info on the use of the AGC, written after the Apollo I fire (hence for a Block I AGC). Typed in by an enthusiast. Apollo Saturn Reference Page -- lots of data, oriented toward modellers. Programmable Technologies -- some other useful technical data National Air and Space Museum (Smithsonian) -- info on their Apollo guidance and control collection. Apollo descent films -- some great video. A personal account -- from Fred Martin. EMC corporation -- one of Massachussetts largest computer companies was founded by a member of the AGC design team. site last updated 12-08-2002 by Alexander Brown |
