Interview with Valentina Ponomareva

In 1963 Valentina Ponomareva was a back-up of the first woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. After 1969, Ponomareva worked at the Scientific Research Department of the Cosmonaut Training Center. Currently Dr. Ponomareva is the head of the History of Aviation and Cosmonautics Section of the Institute for the History of Natural Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Interview with Viktor Przhiyalkovsky

In 1971 Viktor Przhiyalkovsky became Chief Engineer, Deputy Director, Deputy General Designer of the Unified Series of computers, and Deputy Chief Designer of the Argon onboard computer complex at the Scientific Research Center for Electronic Computer Technology in Moscow. In 1977, he was appointed Director of the Center, General Designer of the Unified Series, and Chief Designer of the Argon complex. Currently Dr. Przhiyalkovsky heads the Laboratory for Technical and Economic Analysis at the Center.

Since 1956 Georgii Priss has been deputy chief designer of spacecraft control systems in charge of equipment and the test-and-launch complex. He was the principal integration engineer during the design of control systems for the R-5 and the R-7 rockets, and the principal developer of control systems for the N-1 and the Buran projects. Currently Dr. Priss heads Integration Department at the Pilyugin Research-and-Production Center of Automatics and Instrument-Making.

Interview with Yurii Zybin

In 1961 Yurii Zybin joined the Experimental Design Bureau No. 1, led by the Chief Designer of Soviet spacecraft Sergei Korolev. He worked on navigational systems at the department of control systems, led by Ernst Gaushus. Zybin was one of the supervisors of software development for the Salyut onboard computers on board the Salyut space stations, and for peripheral exchange adapters (PEAs) on board the Mir space station. Currently he works at the Bauman Moscow State Engineering University (MGTU).

Interview with Yurii Tiapchenko

In 1961 Yurii Tiapchenko joined the Flight Research Institute in Zhukovskii near Moscow. He worked on information display systems (IDS) for all Soviet piloted spacecraft, except the Vostok. Tiapchenko supervised the design and development of IDS for the service module of the Mir space station, for the International Space Station, and for the modernized piloted spacecraft Soyuz-TMA. In 1993-2002, he was deputy Chief Designer and the head of the Division of Onboard Information Display Systems at the Bureau. 

Interview with Tom Sheridan

In 1959 Tom Sheridan joined MIT faculty. Since 1984, he has been Professor of Engineering and Applied Psychology; since 1993, Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Dr. Sheridan is Former president, IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society; Former president, Human Factors Society; Former chair, Human Factors Committee, National Research Council; Former chair, IVHS Safety and Human Factors Committee. In the 1960s, he worked on the problems of man-machine allocation in the Apollo navigation, guidance and control system.
