Abstract
We develop a quantum mechanical formalism which facilitates the study of interactions locally in semiconductors. It is based on the operators ψ°(m,x→,k→,t) and ψ(m,x→,k→,t) which are defined so as to create and destroy electronic wave-packet states having well-defined position x→ and crystal momentum ħk→ in a given energy band m of a crystal. We apply the formalism to develop local-operator equations of motion for semiconductor lasers.
