Abstract
Very little progress has been made during the last decade toward a theoretical understanding of the physical properties of matter in the solid state. The reasons for this stagnation are very clearly presented in a recent paper by A. Smekal.(1) According to Smekal, the properties of solids can be arranged in two large groups as follows.
