Abstract
The axisymmetric, incompressible, viscoresistive magnetohydrodynamic equations for purely poloidal currents I(r,z) are transformed into three coupled scalar partial differential equations. These show that finite ∂I/∂z acts as a volumetric source of fluid "vorticity" which drives strong poloidal flows (jets).
