Abstract
The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is an electronic research tool which provides uniquely powerful access to published multi-wavelength data on extragalactic objects. It consists of a computer database with a broad range of published information, and a user interface which allows fast and flexible retrieval of the information via the Internet. It is accessible anonymously and free of charge to any account on the networks, and used primarily by researchers, students and librarians. NED is physically located at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) on the Caltech campus in Pasadena, California (USA).

Additional Information: | © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 1995. Many people have contributed to NED, and continue to do so; we would like to thank Rick Ebert and Maneesh Sahani for their help in the software arena; we also recognize IPAC's support, especially through the computer systems group. We especially acknowledge the friendly collaboration of the SIMBAD project, Centre des Données astronomiques de Strasbourg. Last but not least, we thank all the authors and the National Space Science Data Center, who send us computer-readable versions of their data or catalogs. NED is funded by the Science Operations Branch of the Astrophysics Division, Office of Space Science and Applications, NASA. This work is carried out by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. | ||||||
