Macrocystis does not occur in tropical waters (Womersley 1954) and kelp canopies in southern and Baja California frequently deteriorate or disappear during warm summers (Brandt 1923; Clendenning & Sargent 1971). Many workers have assumed· that kelp tissues do not tolerate water temperatures of 20°C or higher. Clendenning & Sargent (1971), however, found highest photosynthetic rates for Macrocystis occurred between 20° and 25°C for southern California Macrocystis (25° to 30° was optimal for Baja California kelp). Concentrations of macro nutrient are almost nil in the mixed layers within the Southern California Bight after strong summer thermoclines develop, leading Jackson (1975) to suggest that improper nutrition might be a factor in summertime canopy deterioration.
