Using the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO), Phillips et al. (1987) detected CO emission from the nearby radio galaxy Centaurus A. They reported emission from the dust lane region and showed that the material rotated very much like a disk galaxy imbedded within the larger elliptical system. They also showed that the heliocentric systemic velocity revealed by the CO observations at 547 (± 5) km/s was close to the value of 538 (± 10) km/s found for the elliptical component by Wilkinson et al. (1986).
