Abstract

In deoxyribonucleoprotein from which histone F1 and most nonhistone proteins were removed by treatment with tRNA in the presence of Mg²⁺, one can find very long stretches of completely free DNA (average length of about 4×10³ base pairs). They alternate with stretches of DNA (∼16×10³ base pairs) which are nearly uniformly covered with the other four histones.
