Abstract

A partially obstructed latex tube was used to model a stenosed artery. The frequency spectrum contains peaks corresponding to the resonant frequencies of the tube. Resonant peaks were also observed in the spectra of the Korotkoff sounds from the brachial artery. The resonant peaks are related to the geometry and elasticity of the artery and the surrounding tissue. Some useful diagnostic information about the state of the arteries is therefore likely to be obtained from the spectral analysis of arterial sounds.
