Abstract
The performance of ballistic trajectory tracking via bank rate modulation is studied for a lifting blunt body capsule. Ballistic reentry serves as a backup mode to nominal lifting flight and enables a layer of fault tolerance during reentry. A common approach to this problem utilizes constant bank rate as an open-loop control method. A trade study on the effectiveness of the constant bank rate maneuver is performed. Optimality and tracking efficiency criteria are defined for determining a minimum bank rate. Methods for executing this maneuver with limited state knowledge are studied. Finally, a 3-DOF Monte Carlo simulation of the proposed control scheme illustrates its efficacy and applicable range of uses.
