Abstract

A collection of fish fossils has been made at five different localities on the west side of Sepulveda Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains, California. This material presents an interesting assemblage of forms, noteworthy because of the excellent state of preservation of many of the specimens and also because it includes several new types of fishes. The collection is second only to that obtained from the Lompoc Miocene diatomaceous deposits of San Luis Obispo County, California. Study of this collection furnishes a basis for determination of age relationships not only with the Lompoc fauna but also with additional Miocene assemblages, when these are better known, in southern California. It has been possible from this study to obtain information on the broader relationships of some Pacific Coast Miocene fishes and upon the ecologic conditions under which these forms existed and under which their remains were entombed.
