Abstract

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) can be considered one of the most important achievements of flow diagnostic technologies in the modern history of fluid mechanics. In this chapter, our intent is to provide a general understanding of the concepts behind this powerful global quantitative flow visualization method as well as some if its novel applications. Various technical aspects of digital particle image velocimetry have been the subject of numerous papers and books in the available literature. Throughout this paper, some key references will be introduced for the reader to consult for deeper exposure to the subject.
