Abstract
Two measures of seismic activity are proposed. The first, called specific seismicity is the sum of the energy released by all the earthquakes occurring in an area in a given time, divided by the area and the time. The second is called tectonic flux and is the sum of the square roots of the energies of all the earthquakes occurring in a given area in a given time, divided by the area and the time. Tectonic flux is proportional to the rate of strain release in the area. Maps contoured in either measure are convenient for expressing the seismic activity of a region.
