Abstract

The fracture toughness of three SiC-based materials was examined and correlated to toughening mechanisms. Crack deflection along grain boundaries in hot-pressed SiC-Al_2O_3 and SiC-ZrO_2 provided notable toughness increases compared to sintered α-Sic, which fractures transgranularly. The existence of a crack-deflection mechanism was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy.
