Additional Information:© 1998 California Institute of Technology. This report is the result of six months stay at the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology. I was offered the possibility to join Caltech as a "Visitor in Aeronautics" during this period. This stay would not have been possible without the help of several persons and institutions. First of all I thank my advissor in The Netherlands, Prof. Tijdeman, for his continuing efforts to support me and other students. He made it possible to interrupt my PhD project at the University of Twente for a stay at Caltech. The generous support from the department of Applied Mechanics and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering enabled a good quality of life in beautiful sunny (?, El Nino) Southern California. In this respect also thank Prof. Huetink and Prof. Grootenboer. The work at Caltech was both challenging and rewarding. I thank my colleagues at the Explosion Dynamics Group and my advisor, Prof. Shepherd, for creating a very stimulating and pleasant environment both inside and outside the lab. The work could not have been completed without the help of Raza, Mike and Eric in the Guggenheim sub-basement lab. This research was sponsored by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Their support is gratefully acknowledged.
