Abstract

After our previous paper, we developed a method to deconvolve body waves into a multiple shock sequence. We first consider a general case where a rupture process consists of subevents with arbitrary source parameters, and next a special case where a source process consists of subevents with two different fault mechanisms. A simple criterion to check the significance of solution is given by a statistical consideration on the estimated values. The method is applied to two large earthquakes: the 1976 Tangshan earthquake and the 1976 East Turkey earthquake. In both cases, the earthquake sources consist of major strike-slip events and minor thrust events. The total seismic moments of the major events are comparable to the values obtained by surface-wave analyses. The 1968 Borrego mountain earthquake is also analysed by the same method for comparison. A single-mechanism solution results in a good waveform match and no significant secondary mechanism is required for this event.
