Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer invented the
Scanning Tunneling Microscope in 1981 working at IBM Zurich.
Binnig also invented the Atomic Force Microscope with Calvin
Quate in 1986 while spending a year at Stanford University.
Binnig and Rohrer received the Nobel Prize for physics in
1986.
