Introduction to the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)

Scanning tunneling microscope (STM)

The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is an instrument with which one can image surfaces so finely that individual atoms are resolved. The STM can even move atoms about. The image on the left depicts the results of such a process. The images were obtained by scanning the surface with the same instrument.
