Abstract

Adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes on acidic phospholipid membranes can trigger profound changes in membrane organization. For example, treatment of a phosphate-buffered suspension of the acidic lipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG, 1) with ionene-6,6 bromide (2) converts the normal L&dquo; DPPG bilayer to an unusual interdigitated arrangement (Scheme 1). We are currently exploring the relation between the structure of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte and the induction of acyl chain interdigitation in DPPG and related bilayers.
