During shock-wave consolidation of irregularly shaped (≈50 µm diameter) Markomet 1064 powder (Ni_(55.8)Mo_(25.7)Cr_(9.7)B_(8.8), obtained from melt-spun ribbon, the shock energy is preferentially input at particle surfaces. Heat flow to particle interiors is sufficiently rapid to quench melted regions and form the amorphous phase at shock energies less than about 400 kJ/kg.
