Abstract
Free oscillations, surface wave dispersion, travel times, and high-resolution body wave data, combined with laboratory data, provide constraints on the composition and state of the various regions of the earth. Anderson & Hart (1976) have recently presented an earth model based on a large body of free oscillation and travel time data. This model, designated C2, incorporates structure in both the mantle and core found using special high-resolution body wave techniques. Much of the structure is beyond the resolving power of such gross earth data as free oscillation periods and differential travel times. This model, shown in Figure 1, provides an appropriate basis for a discussion of the composition of the various regions of the earth. Model 1066A of Gilbert & Dziewonski (1975), based on more normal mode data but less body wave data, is also shown.
