Abstract
Recent studies in the sterols and triterpenes have yielded results which strongly suggest that these two classes of compounds originate by the same or a very similar biosynthetic pathway. In this regard, the acyclic triterpene, squalene, has been shown to be an efficient precursor of cholesterol and its conversion has been envisioned as shown below.
