Seawater contains particles, both inorganic and biologically produced, ranging in size from colloidal to those which will settle under gravity. The concentration of particulates matter in any part of the oceans depends on the proximity and magnitude of inputs of solid material. Such sources can be both external (atmosphere, land masses, marine sediments) an internal, which includes particles formed biologically as well as those produced by bubbling, precipitation, etc.
