Gas proportional counters which can be used for the localisation of ionising radiation in one or two dimensions are described. The technique of charge division on a resistive electrode is used to obtain position information, this electrode being the anode in the linear detector. In two dimensions the counter signal is obtained in a new way - from two induction grids placed between the anode and the cathode, each grid providing position information in one direction. Application of the two dimensional counter for X-ray imaging is illustrated. These counters combine ease of readout with good spatial resolution; in the one dimensional detector the standard deviation of positron measurements can be 0.04% of the sensitive length.
