Abstract
Changes in science, education, and policy, involving the earth sciences, demand the attention of our community: Congress will redirect so-called curiosity-driven research support toward research with societal relevance. Career opportunities are shifting from dominance by the mineral and fuel industries to dominance by industries concerned with hydrology, land use, environmental and urban geology, and waste isolation. Earth system science is being embraced in research and education as a multidisciplinary, integrating theme that can enhance understanding of local geosystems.
