Abstract

It is useful to view the mechanisms and regulation of RNA transcript ion at different levels of resolution. Each view stresses different aspects of the structure and behavior of the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which is the enzyme that catalyzes specific gene transcription. We review here the mechanism of transcription as catalyzed by the RNA polymerase of Escherichia coli, which is by far the best understood member of this class of enzymes.
