Interest in vortices and whirlpools goes back to prehistory, and the vortex is a fairly common old religious symbol. In more recent times, philosophers and artists have been attracted by vortex motion. Beautiful drawings of vortices in turbulent flow were made by Leonardo da Vinci at the beginning of the 16th century. Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night" suggests that he was familiar with the phenomenon of vortex pairing. For further examples, see Lugt.
