Abstract
A brief summary of some recent research on the Hubble Deep Field is presented. Particular attention is paid to the incidence of strong gravitational lensing and it is argued that the optical depth is nearly ten times smaller than average. Preliminary estimates of the incidence of galaxy-galaxy lensing are consistent with the presence of a large population of faint galaxies at large redshift. An estimate of the galaxy luminosity function is consistent with the local version undergoing passive evolution out to z ∼ 1. The OII luminosity function shows more rapid evolution to this redshift.
