Abstract

In this contribution I describe progress on and preliminary results from a redshift survey on the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) that is being carried out using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck Telescope. The primary goal of this research (which involves the combined effort and cooperation of several research groups) is to assemble a uniform redshift sample for about 500 galaxies and use it to probe the spatial distribution, the birth rate and the evolution of field galaxies. There are various secondary goals, one of which - the investigation of strong and weak gravitational lensing - I will also discuss here.
