Abstract
Newly discovered contemporary accounts, and old reports long overlooked, are here cited and coördinated with published reports and observations concerning the shock of January 9, 1857; and the extent and intensity of the earthquake are discussed. It is concluded that no other shock so great and so strong has occurred in the Coast Range region of south-central and southern California since the coming of white men.

Louderback for copies of letters and articles published in the San Francisco Evening Bulletin, and for verifying, from clippings in the Bancroft Library, the language of the account by Stephen Barton which was supplied originally by the late Professor E. The list of aftershocks at Fort Tejon was excerpted from photostats of the report of Colonel Mansfield, which were lent to the Seismological Laboratory by the State Ranger in charge of the California Historical Monument at the site of the Fort, through the good offices of Mr. R.
