Abstract
Newly discovered contemporary accounts, and old reports long overlooked, are here cited and coördinated with published reports and observations concerning the shock of January 9, 1857; and the extent and intensity of the earthquake are discussed. It is concluded that no other shock so great and so strong has occurred in the Coast Range region of south-central and southern California since the coming of white men.

The writer is indebted for aid in collecting the information presented to the following gentlemen : In chief measure, to Professor George D. Louderback for copies of letters and articles published in the San Francisco Evening Bulletin, and for verifying, from clippings in the Bancroft Library, the language of the account by Stephen Barton which was supplied originally by the late Professor E. I. McCormac. Professor Louderback also contributed valuable critical comments. The late Professor Chester Stock, and through him Dr. Arthur Woodward of the Los Angeles County Museum, made valuable information available. Professor C. F. Richter brought to notice the account by Dr. Wm. F. Edgar. The list of aftershocks at Fort Tejon was excerpted from photostats of the report of Colonel Mansfield, which were lent to the Seismological Laboratory by the State Ranger in charge of the California Historical Monument at the site of the Fort, through the good offices of Mr. R. D. Forester. The map which illustrates the paper was prepared by Mr. John M. Nordquist. The writer is grateful to all these men for their valuable assistance. | ||||||
