The purpose of impregnating a poorly cemented or porous rock before making a thin section, is to hold the particles of the rock together with balsam, where the natural bond is insufficient. In order to fulfill this purpose, the balsam of the impregnation should fill all pores completely, without leaving air pockets, and should be of the same hardness throughout the rock. The balsam should be neither too soft-since then it lacks the strength of holding the rock together and picks up abrasive in grinding-nor too hard-since then it is brittle and useless for its purpose.
