Abstract
This paper is one of a series which will deal with the occurrence and distribution of the precious metals in the ores of several of the more important base-metal mines of western North America. The Montana and Idaho Mines are situated near the village of Ruby in the Oro Blanco mining district of Santa Cruz County in . southern Arizona. Ruby is about 30 miles northwest of Nogales, 70 miles southwest of Tucson, and 5 1/2 miles north of the Mexican border.

Warren, carried on most of his work at the Balch Graduate School of the Geological Sciences, California Institute of Technology, under the auspices of the Commonwealth Fund Foundation of New York. The studies of the junior author, Rodger W. Loofbourow, were conducted at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, with the assistance of the Commonwealth Fund. All the analytical work was done by Mr. F. E. Gregory, except the analysis of the Idaho Mine sample which, together with a number of check analyses, was done by the junior author in the laboratories of the Utah Engineering Experiment Station at the University of Utah. The authors wish to express their thanks to the Eagle-Picher Lead Company and in particular to Mr. F. H. Lerchen, Mr. E. D. Morton, and their staff for their ready cooperation in the securing of the necessary samples. They wish also to thank Dr. F. L. Ransome and Mr. R.
