Abstract
The pH-dependent conformational transition of the hydrophobic polyelectrolyte poly(2-ethylacrylic acid) (PEAA, 1) can be used to design lipid bilayer membranes that release their contents in response to changes in environmental parameters such as pH, temperature, light intensity, and solute (e.g., glucose) concentration. Such responsive membrane systems are finding important applications in drug delivery, signal amplification in biochemical assays, and molecular recognition.
