Abstract
On the basis of the general theory of relativity, Einstein(1) and de Sitter(2) have each proposed a line element which might correspond to the large-scale metrical properties of the universe as a whole, neglecting local deviations due to the neighborhood of stars or stellar systems. Neither of these line elements, however, has proved entirely satisfactory.
