Abstract

Gerhard Domagk (1895-1964) was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the antibacterial effects of Prontosil, the first of the sulfonamide drugs. David Baltimore shared, with Renato Dulbecco and Howard Temin, the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1975 for discoveries concerning the interaction between tumor viruses and genetic material of host cells and the role of reverse transcriptase.
