Lectures on Statistical Mechanics (II)
Creators
Abstract
These notes follow the lectures except for a small number of modifications, especially in §6,9,10. Although no new results are given (except for a few technicalities), the notes should prove helpful as a guide to what has been, and what currently is being done in the subject. Consequently, the treatment is more complete for the well established aspects of the subject (ch. I, II), and is sketchy for the remainder (ch. III). The emphasis is on the mathematical foundations of the subject, and a precise treatment of theorems. A certain amount of mathematical maturity on the part of the reader is helpful, as well as a nodding acquaintance with statistical mechanics. For background and further discussion, we refer the reader to Huang [1], Arnold-Avez [1], and Abraham [1], (Bibliographies are at the end of each chapter.) There are a number of errors in these notes although most of them are mere oversights. For example on page 46, the figure is incorrect. We would appreciate knowing of errors, however minor.
