Longitudinal wave-propagation modes along a positive column

Measurements have been made of the propagation of waves along the positive column of mercury discharge with characteristic velocities of the order of the speed of sound for the electron gas, (3KTₑ/mₑ)^(1/2). These waves have been excited by appropriate couplers, in both dipole and rotationally symmetric modes.
