Principal Scientific Results from the Surveyor Program
Abstract
The successful soft landings made by five Surveyors permitted detailed examinations of the lunar surface at four mare sites along an equatorial belt and at one highland site in the southern hemisphere. The aiming areas, selected before launch, were chosen after examination of telescopic and Lunar Orbiter photographs (except for the Surveyor I mission, which preceded the Lunar Orbiter flights). All five spacecraft landed within these selected areas.
