Shock wave data and the study of the Earth

Abstract

Basic concepts underlying equation of state measurements on earth materials using shock wave techniques are discussed, and results of experiments on Twin Sisters olivine and experiments of others are examined. Results provide direct evidence for 'breakdown of olivine to a yet unknown structure having the density of the oxides; this presumably occurs in the Earth at depths of about 650 km. It appears that this type of reaction can occur in the submicrosecond time scale of a shock experiment.
