Abstract

The low-mass star formation and Hubble Space Telescope communities suffered a tragic loss in April 2024 with the passing of Will Fischer at the age of 44.

Will had recently been promoted to the position of AURA Scientist at STScI, where he had been a deputy manager for Hubble’s Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) and a key player in Hubble’s Ultraviolet Legacy Library for Young Stars as Essential Standards (ULLYSES). He was a distinctly versatile scientist, who used data from the UV to the far-IR to study star formation and accretion, and who led some of the foundational studies of episodic accretion onto protostars. His colleagues remember him for his steady approach to difficult problems, his unassuming personality, and his generosity of spirit.
