Degassing of magmas: Constraints from experimental determinations of volatile solubilities and studies of volcanic glasses

Abstract

Solubilities of CO_2 and H_2O have been determined experimentally for basaltic and rhyolitic melts over a range of pressures. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used to measure concentrations of carbonate, hydroxyl, and CO_2 and H_2O molecules in glasses quenched from vapor-saturated melts.
