Advantages of Using Geocentric Latitude in Calculating Distances

Abstract

In seismological calculation of distance it has hitherto been customary to treat the earth as spherical. The error thus introduced has generally been held to be small, as the difference between the equatorial and polar radii is 22 km.; this would affect the travel time of longitudinal waves by a quantity of the order of 2 seconds.
