Stable Isotopes
Abstract
This report covers the research on stable isotope geochemistry that was published from 1963 to 1966 by scientists in the United States. Most results were obtained on the isotopes of the light elements, principally hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and sulfur. The heavier elements, and most other light elements, do not show significant or measurable variation in isotopic composition in nature; hence they are not useful in interpreting geologic processes. Rather than consider each isotope in turn, it is more useful to consider the major type of geologic problem that can be studied profitably using stable isotope techniques.
